Not a simple clear cut answer as there is quite a range of salaries. From the statistics I have seen the typical range is between $100,000 to $250,000, although there are some practice owners who earn less, and some who earn much more!

Many factors are involved in how high a practice owner's salary would be, including the type of practice (large animal, mixed animal, small animal, specialty), the size of practice (number of veterinarians), location of practice (rural or large city), and so forth. I should mention that the size of a practice does not always equate to a large salary for the owner, as the larger the practice is the cost of running it increases (employee salaries/benefit packages, larger number of employees, maintaining inventory, and so on). Quite often a small practice, efficiently run can be very profitable for the owner! Nonetheless, the goal in any type of practice is to keep revenue up, costs down, and this equates to good profitability, so more money for the practice owner.

Some veterinarians are quite content to work as a non-practice owning "associate veterinarian" as they do not want the headaches of running the practice. Many veterinarians have an independent streak and their dream is to run their own practice (like me). Frequently, practice owners are looking for a partner to share some of the burden of running a practice and most practice owners will eventually allow an associate who has proved their worth to buy into the practice. Obviously the terms of the buy-in vary widely, but in the long run it sets up a succession for when the practice owner retires the partner buys them out and takes over the practice.

A trend in veterinary medicine over the last several years is the influx of corporate owned practices. Younger veterinarians are not as eager to buy in so some practice owners look to the corporations who are interested in buying veterinary practices. This is a source of ready money and a way for the practice owners to eventually retire.
