A balling gun is a piece of equipment used by bovine practitioners and owners to deliver a bolus (relatively large single collection) of material into a cow or calf's stomach. Balling guns are commonly used to administer oral medications and cow magnets (rounded magnets that are placed in the stomach to collect wires and pieces of metal so they don't puncture the stomach wall). The bolus is loaded into the balling gun (which is not an actual gun - it uses hydraulic or pneumatic pressure rather than powder or a cartridge), then the tip of the balling gun is placed behind the torus of the tongue so the cow can't spit it out. The trigger is squeezed and the bolus is delivered to the entrance of the esophagus and is swallowed. Although this often appears uncomfortable for the cow, it is a quick and painless method of medicating cows when done properly.
