Since animals were domesticated, well before recorded history. Those involved in medicine and health care simply encompassed animals in their practice. Recorded history doesn't tell us much about this, but there is no doubt it happened quickly and in some cases animals, because of the huge expenditure of time and effort in their husbandry, were considered a priority over less valuable humans.
