You must have:

1 workbench/crafting bench

1 stick (S)

2 wooden planks, gold ingots, iron ingots, blocks of cobblestone or diamonds (M)

Open crafting on the work bench. Place the stick in one of the bottom three squares. Then place the two iron ingots/gold ingots/planks of wood/blocks of cobblestone/diamonds directly above the stick. Happy crafting!

You need a crafting table. Go into the crafting table and place a stick on any of the squares at the bottom. Above the stick, place a block of wood plank, a block of cobble, an ingot or iron of gold or a diamond. Above this, place another of whatever you just placed below. It should look like this:if W is stick and X is the sword material:

In the work bench menu put one "stick" at the bottom square and put wood plank, stone, iron, gold, or diamond in the two upper slots directly above the stick.
