No, the way the screen works is that it has a special filter in place to make part of the screen visible only to one of your eyes, the other part to the other eye. The problem with this is it halves the effective frame rate for moving pictures, and requires the user's head to be in a specific position relative to the console, or else they see double images and the 3D effect is lost.

Yes. 3DS game cards are slightly longer across the top, and will not fit into other consoles. Also the 3D content would probably break your system if you somehow forced it into a non-3DS
'Pokemon' is a multi-platform franchise of games. The main series games are exclusively released on handheld consoles, such as the Game Boy, and the DS. There are many spin-off titles for handhelds, but also for non handheld consoles too, such as the Gamecube and Wii. While there are no 3DS Pokemon games out at the moment, it can be assumed some will be released in the future.
Yes, it uses a non-removable rechargable battery.
For virtual console games for Nintendo-based systems, since the naming scheme of buttons are the same across all Nintendo systems, any button in-game corresponds to the same button on the 3DS. (A = A, etc...) For convenience, when soft resetting a Game Boy virtual console game, the select button has also been mapped to the Y button. As there are no games from non-Nintendo systems yet, their control schemes are unknown at this time.
No, there are no Pokémon games on PS3 or any other non-Nintendo console.

Well, the majority of PlayStation and Xbox games are all violent unfortunately and seem to be only suitable for male teenagers. But Nintendo games are praised for their non-violent appeal. For kids and those soft at heart, Nintendo games are the way to go. For teenagers, anything but Nintendo. That is how the video game world proceeds today.
The Final Fantasy games come closest, but there's not much else.

Well, 12 year old boys like going outdoors with friends sometimes, so i would suggest a skateboard or a bike, they would like that, or something of the technology variety, i have heard that the new Nintendo 3ds is out now, the Nintendo wii, or Nintendo dsi, both very good and very portable, but if you want a non portable hand help controller device, i advice the x-box 360 or the ps3 ...ps2's are always an offer but they hardly sell those games anymore, eBay sells cheap games sometimes, but consider that your child will be thankful :)
