Movie 300 and the real Persian Wars
Comparison and Contraction
The Movie 300 is the reflection of the real Persian Wars. The movie 300 tried to show how the Persians Wars were fought. Some things that didn't happen in the real Persian Wars were added in the movie 300; these things were added to the movie so it could have fantasy or fiction. Some of those things that did not occur were: Spartans not having slaves, Spartans being really so good at war, Sparta going alone against the Persians, Persians using elephants and rhinos, and just king Leonidas wearing a plumed helmet. There were also things that did really occur in the real life of Persians as in the movie. Some of these things were boys leaving home at the age of 7 for warrior training, Spartan woman having rights, and Spartans officials deciding if the new baby born should be discarded or not.
The movie 300 shows that Greek Spartan cities did not have any slaves but in the real Persian city slaves existed. Greeks, Including Spartans conquered neighbor areas to acquire more land or expand their empire, and to build their slave labor force. The movie shows that the Spartans didn't have slaves, but actually they did. Many of the Greek, soldiers who fought at the battle of Thermopylae were forced to fight because they were slaves.
As shown in the movie 300 all Spartan babies born were checked by a Spartan officer. This Spartan officer decided if the new baby recently born should be discarded or not. Because Sparta was such a military civilization they did not want unhealthy and weak babies because they would be useless. Spartans babies had to pass an examination first and if he or she proved well built and sturdy the state ordered the father to bring it up, and was given one of the 9,000 lots of land. But if the baby was puny and deformed they dispatched or sent it to what they called "the place of rejection" a precipitous spot by the Mount Taygetus.
The biggest problem or difference with the movie 300 is that the film leaves the audience believing that the Spartans were the only Greek force to lead an attack against the Persians. But this is not true because at one point an allied Greek fleet led by Athens held off the Persians. After this Athenian fleet saved Greece by destroying the Persian fleet during the Battle of Salamis, this great victory in the battle of Salamis marked the turning point in war, and also marked the beginning of Greece as a unified nation.
In conclusion The Persian Wars and the Movie 300 have some similarities and dissimilarities because the movie was supposed to be a reflection of The Persian wars. But because the Movie 300 is a film created some things that happened during the movie did not actually occur in The Real Persian Wars. Some things like only Leonidas having a plumed helmet over all soldiers was added to the movie in order to stand him out and identify him as a king.
