No the pets cannot die. If they irritate you or anything you could put them back in the inventory box, and leave them there for a couple of days. If you have more then one pet, I have a dog and cat. The dog acts up, but the cat doesn't. I noticed when I put them both out at the same time. The cat begins to act like the dog, laying on the beds and couches and begging for food when my people sit down to eat. If they annoy me so much, I put them in my pool. If you buy a full sized pool or a kiddie pool, drag your pet towards it and put them down in the pool. They stay stuck there even after you turn off your kindle! :) hopefully that helped!
