WWII officially came to an end after the USA (in one of this country's most horrific acts in history) dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing lots and lots of innocent people. This caused Japan to surrender. The bombings were "justified" by the government because they didn't want to risk the lives of soldiers by sending them to attack.

It started on September 1st, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. But it ended partially on July of 1945 in Europe when Hitler killed himself, but fully ended when we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki and threatened to nuke Tokyo (even though we spent the only two we had on the first two cities.)
