If you want to update it normally with an official firmware, use the system update. You'll need a router. For a Custom Firmware you need Lumines and 3.50 or less or a Pandora's Battery and Magic Memory Stick. or possibly the original GTA for 3.0. With Lumines or GTA you downgrade to 1.50 and then upgrade to CFW and with a pandora's battery you just go straight to CFW, I suggest using PSP Grader to make the MMS.
