Kratos became the God of War after he defeated Ares, the former God of War, in a brutal battle. Initially a mortal Spartan warrior, Kratos was tricked into serving Ares, who manipulated him into killing his own family. Consumed by grief and seeking revenge, Kratos ultimately confronted Ares and killed him using the Blade of Olympus. As a reward for his victory and to end his suffering, Zeus appointed Kratos as the new God of War.
