It was a short delaying action in a series of wars and battles that lasted for fifty years, and had no obvious effect on them.
Its significance was it became a symbol of selflessness - the Spartan element of the Greek force stayed behind as a rearguard and died to allow the main Greek force to escape from the pass.

It was just a holding operation to force a naval battle to weaken the Persian force attacking Greece. The effort failed, and the issue was decided at three later decisive battles - Salamis, Plataia and Mycale. The direct answ is that it had no influence on the world, which is, after all, a bit bigger than a corner of the Mediterranean Sea. The indirect effect is that the Spartan defence became a byword for staunch resistance.
The Battle of Thermopylae was a defeat for the Greeks and therefore had no major influence on history. It merely held up the Persian advance for a while and provided a romantic image of military bravery for people in the future to look back upon. The Battle of Marathon and the Battle of Salamis were much more important. These were the battles that, unlike Thermopylae, defeated the Persian invasions of Greece and secured the freedom of the Greek city states.Since the Greek city states were the basis of European civilization, historically, it was important they remained free or the entire history of the world from then on would have been quite different!
