The game starts you out at level 1. From then on, you earn XP to level you up. The highest level you can be is level 30. Afterr that, if you choose to, you can do "ranked" games. It's a more competitive play (compared to normal games), as you battle for things called League Points. To get League Points (or LP), you have to win games. If your MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is high, you'll be placed with higher skill-leveled players. If you win, you get more LP. If you don't have high MMR, you'll be placed with lower skill-leveled players, and will gain LP slower.

Once you hit level 30, you have to play 10 provisionals. This means, you play 10 ranked games. Depending on how many you win or lose, you'll be placed in a rank. Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Challenger. There are also divisions in each rank. 1-5. 1 is the best, and 5 is the lowest.

To move up a division, you have to get 100 LP, and win two out of three games. To move up a tier, you have to get 100 LP, and win 3 out of 5 games. The best players are in the Diamond and Challenger Tier (that's where the pros are).
