How do you activate the red boxes in Mario 64?

In Super Mario 64 (and its remake for the DS) the red boxes allow Mario (and friends) to fly with the Wing Cap. In the DS version, once you have collected 14 stars, in the main lobby of the castle (the room you enter after crossing the bridge outside), stand on the sun symbol, go into first person camera, and look up. This should teleport you to a new stage, wherein you'll immediately start flying around. In the center tower the Red Switch can be found, which activates the red boxes. Make sure to grab the 8 red coins while you're there, as they grant you a star.

After a mysterious voice talks to you, get Mario, go to the area with the mysterious voice and press the x button until you close up. Then, look at the top of Peach's castle. A shiny thing will transport you to a sky world. You will have wings though. Hold the Control Pad up and go down, down is up. Go down to the only reachable platform and walk to a ? Switch. Either Ground Pound or walk on the switch to activate ALL red ? boxes!

When Yoshi uses a ? box press the attack button to breathe fire!

When Mario uses a ? box, he blows up into a balloon! Press the attack button to go higher.

When Luigi uses a ? box he is invisble! You walk through enemies, poison gas, and most gates!

To get the green boxes (which contain metal caps) you must go to the hazy maze cave. Simply go to the basement in the castle go to an area with water on the floor. Take the second door on your right. Go through the door, and jump into the black pool. Once you are in the level, you can either long jump over to the door at the left, or you can navigate through to the door at the right.

Left turn

Long jump over the chasm, and go through the door. You will then be on a wire floor where a spider will be waiting. Follow the road until it ends. Both routes meet here.

Right turn

Navigate through the twists and turns, avoiding the Spiders and the flame spurts. Long jump over the chasm when the flame spurts are not spurting. Go through the door, and slide down the pole. Take the first left you see, and go through the door. Both routes meet here

Long jump again over the slippery slope, Dodge the falling rocks, and go up the hill. Once you are past the rocks, go through the door and down the elevator. Go down the hill until you are in the water. Climb on the dinosaur's back and ground pound. This will lower his head, which you can then climb on to direct him. Whatever way you face, he will turn that way. Get him to swim over to the island that is up against the wall with the wire mesh coming out of it. Jump off onto the island, go through the door, and jump into the black pool. You will then be transported to the level with the green switch. Run through, avoiding the flying snifits (they will shoot bullets at you). Take a left, jumping from island to island, staying out of the water. Climb on top of the green switch at the end. You can get the 8 red coins here if you like. If not, simply jump in the water and let it carry you out.

After you get around 15 stars or so, a light will appear in the main hall of the castle. Look up at where the light is coming from and you will magically be teleported to a bonus level where you will find a switch that can activate the red blocks. Press it and bam! The red blocks are filled in. After that you can leave the level by just falling of the stage. You won't die, trust me.

You have to wait until that big beam of sunlight appears the front room of the castle, you know the big room when you first enter? Well when you see the beam push zoom and look up. You will be flying. Fly down to the red switch on the castle tower and GROUND POUND it. the red boxes will appear in all worlds.
