Once you are sailing among the five outlying islands, you will collect doubloons (cash) and cargo as salvage (it is just floating in the water). You will buy and sell cargoes, trying to make a profit by buying low and selling higher. Each of the islands except Parrot Port has a cargo you can buy very cheaply.
Once you have enough doubloons (3000 for the smallest new ship), you can buy one at the Ship Shape shipbuilders shop at Dragon Cove. Used ships have a small resale trade-in value.
