Press the "i" key, the inventory should come up, near the top you'll see for boxes, here you can craft stuff, if you put one would plank in each of the crafting boxes, you can craft a crafting table, which allows you to craft more stuff that you not be able to craft using the four boxes in your inventory.
After version 1.4 was released, some of the hotkeys changed. Now you have to press "e" and not "i" to open the inventory with the crafting.
Press "e" to access your inventory. It has a 2x2 crafting grid, where you can place a wood block to create 4 wood planks. Left click on the stack of wood planks, and right click on each square in the crafting grid to create a crafting table. click on the crafting table and place it somewhere in the action bar. Then, press "e" again to close your inventory. While you're holding the crafting table, right click somewhere on the ground to place it. Right click on the crafting table to see a 3x3 crafting grid.
