You need to first find sprites, cut them out of their sheets using Paint, PhotoShop, or Gimp. Then open up a file, and upload all of these sprites. If you want to make something like a Koopa moving, you need to add each picture in the Sprite Editing mode. You must make sure each picture is perfectly alligned using Gimp/PhotoShop/Paint. Then you go to Backgrounds and add all of the backgrounds you want. Next you can go to Objects, develop the objects one by one, enemy after enemy. If you want to give different enemies paths. (EX. Koopa walks forward three blocks, down two, then up one) Do this in the paths section. Now go to rooms and make the room as long as you think neccesary. Design the level (this might take a while). Then add your "Mario" object. Create a view that looks at Mario. Make sure the view is big enough to fit the whole screen. Do this with all of the levels. Make sure to throw in some boss battles. Now go to the Game Information, and write your game information, this can include controls, credits, and legal mumbo-jumbo. Go to Global Game Settings and set to your liking. Now go to File --> Save Executable --> *Prefferably Desktop*. Now you have the full game file on your desktop. Double click it and it will begin playing. Now you can upload it to sites such as YoYo Games, and different forums.

To make games on GameMaker 8.0, start by creating a new project and designing your game environment using the Room Editor. You can create sprites for characters and objects, and define their behaviors using GameMaker Language (GML) or the drag-and-drop interface. Set up events for your objects, such as keyboard inputs or collisions, to dictate how they interact in the game. Finally, test your game frequently and refine it before exporting the final version.
You can't really get the pro version anymore; game maker 8 is out on yoyogames.com. The latest version of the Gamemaker series is 8. They have discontinues support for gamemaker 7.
GameMaker isn't meant for making 3D games, but it is worth the money you pay to register. I hear there is a better 3D game-making program called Roket3D.

Depends what video game you are talking about. You can create a simple 2d/3d game with several softwares (most popular - gamemaker). If you are wanting to create a video game like call of duty etc, you will need knowledge of 3d modelling, animation and other several things.
GameMaker uses its own prgramming language, the Game Maker Language (GML) which was developed by Mark Overmars. GML supplements the drag & drop system within Game Maker.
