There are numerous ways of acquiring a vehicle (not only cars, but boats and tanks as well) in Grand Theft Auto III. As the name implies, stealing them is the most common way of getting hold of a car. Usually the player sees a good-looking car and decides to take it for him/herself. By default, the key to enter vehicles is set to "E" or [Enter], and you will have to be close to either the front left or right side of the car when pressing.

There are also parked cars which may be locked or unlocked. You will not be able to get into the locked ones, and sometimes the unlocked ones have a car-alarm which goes off as you enter them and alerts nearby cops for one badge of aggression.

Note that all cars will stop if you are able to get ahead of them to block their path. Other techniques to be able to get a car when you're on foot is to run to a crossing which has traffic lights. Almost all cars will obey the law and stop at the crossing if the sign shows red, which means you can get into the car and steal it for yourself.

Do not stare oneself blind for the "good" cars (faster, better acceleration etc.) but go for whatever car you can get at first. As soon as you get a car, the better, because this means you are able to catch pretty much every car in the game - no matter how fast the cars are. The AI will never drive faster cars at higher speeds than what you can get out of the slower cars, except in extremely rare cases where the AI itself has stolen a fast car from an AI. With your car, drive past the car you want to steal, turn it 45° (or just break in the same lane as the car you want is driving) and then halt. The car behind will stop, allowing you to steal it.

Again, from time to time, the man/woman you hijacked the car from will not look idly at your attempt to get away and will chase you for a bit and try to throw you out of their car who you recently stole. If they succeed, they will blast away as fast as the car is able to pull off.
