How do you get hideouts on Grand Theft Auto 4?

In Grand Theft Auto IV, there are five possible safehouses, but you can't have all five at the same time.

The safehouses are unlocked by story missions, so spoilers are below.

The first safehouse in Broker is given after the first mission. After Roman's Sorrow the apartment is burned down and you move to Bohan, in which you have a new apartment there.

After completing the mission Hostile Negotiation you get a luxury apartment in Middle Park East, Algonquin.

And after doing at least one mission for Ray Boccino, and the mission Smackdown, you get an apartment in Alderney.

The "optional" safehouse is obtained only if you kill Playboy X. That way, you get his high-end penthouse with a unique outfit in its wardrobe.

Unlike some previous games, you can't buy houses or property in GTA IV.
