You have to close up all the holes that they're using to get in. It's best to do this in the winter, when they're off hibernating somewhere else. Other times of the year it is done with a one-way door of some sort, so they fly away in the evening, then can't get back in in the morning. You don't want to do it in mid-summer, though, because there are likely to be babies left behind while the mothers are off feeding. If you lock the mothers out, the babies will die and rot, which is worse than having live bats in you attic. They will enter and exit from the same location. We had bats coming in our home through the flashing on our roof. We heard a rustling noise in the wall of our sons bedroom around the same time every night. Turns out it was the bats getting ready to leave for the night. If you go outside at dusk and see bats, try to follow the direction they are coming from. We watched 29 bats leave our house, one by one. To get rid of them, we had a 'sock' placed in front of the flashing. This allowed them to leave the house, but they could not get back in. Once we knew all of the bats were gone, we had spray foam put in the area of the flashing that we could not secure. We then nailed chicken wire to weather-treated lumber and created a protector that we installed over the flashing (securing the wood to the roof and just below the flashing. We also had naphthalene sprayed into the attic of our home, where we could hear bats flying around at night. Oh and we also had parts of the wall removed, suctioned (to remove the guano) and replaced by a pest service.
