To get really strong Pokemon, you have to get the perfect nature for what attacks you're gonna be using. For example, if you were raising an Kadabra, and you wanted its attacks to be Psychic, Calm Mind, Agility and Psy Beam, then you would want a Modest natured Abra, because the Modest nature improves the Special Attack stat and worsens the Attack stat, and since Kadabra's moves would be just Status and Special Attack, it would be perfect. Then, you need to make sure the attacks you're using are going to be best suited. It wouldn't be smart to teach a Kadabra Shock Wave instead of Psy Beam because, first of all, Psy Beam is better because it has a chance of confusing your oppenent.
Also, when a Pokemon's type matches up with the type of attack it's using, the amount of damage is multiplied by 1.5! So instead of doing 65 damage to the opponent Clefairy, it would do 100 damage! That's a BIG difference.
Here's another rule to battling with good Pokemon: know your types. Say your Kadabra was battling a Haunter. You use Psy Beam. Now, Psy Beam is a Psychic attack. Haunter is Ghost and Poison. Ding ding! Psychic is effective against Poison! So that multiplies the damage by 2.0. And since Kadabra is a Psychic Pokemon also, the damage is multiplied by another 1.5. So the damage equasion would be (65x2)x1.5=210. 210 damage! Wow!
Now, what about those other two moves? Calm mind and agility? Well, calm mind raises your Special Defense and Special Attack by 1. That may not seem like a big difference. But it is! Instead of doing 90 damage with Psychic, you do 95. Now use it again. That 95 turns into a 100. Ok, maybe not that big of a difference, but it helps a lot! And what about Special Defense? You could be KO'd by the opponent Spheal's Ice Beam, but the raise of Special Defense just might save you. And agility raises your speed by 2. Wow! Now, that just goes to show you how stats affect battle. So I recomend focusing on stats and training to get the best Pokemon possible.

Have a Pokemon knowing strenght on your team and go to a place where you need strenght. Press A in front of the big, grey boulder you want to move and use strenght.
