How do you join second player on Super Mario Galaxy?

You have to have a 2nd Wii-Mote (NOTE: you will not need a nunchuck). Then after you are done selecting which profile, you will havea screen where it says you are with Mario and you have this many star bits and this many stars. On that screen on the bottom right there will be a button. Press it and then it will tell you to press 1 and 2 at the same time and hold it.

Connect both Wiimotes to the Wii. If your pointer says P1, it is co-op mode. P2 plays as a magical forcefield that collects star bits and stops objects from moving.

Just press A on the second player's remote. Player 2 should be able to shoot star bits at enemies and freeze them. :)
