If you've got wood, you can use it as both fuel and the item you wish to smelt, this will create charcoal. Charcoal works exactly the same as coal, so you can craft some sticks and then make torches with them, using the charcoal.

They should always stay lit after they are crafted. They are made by putting a stick under a piece of either coal or charcoal. if it is a redstone torch, it isn't lit because it is being activated by other redstone, so if it is a redstone torch, and it has other redstone devices attached to it, turn the devices off.
