How do you make money on Skyrim?

Kill people and take their money and sell their stuff. Or get the strange amulet out of the windhelm house,find calixto corrium and sell it to him the pickpocket from him then sell it again (repeat) gives you 500 gold each time.

You can join groups or do the entire campaign, but joining groups is better because you can get other stuff like become a werewolf (if you join the companions in Whiterun, which I'm in) as well as earn a wage of about 100 - 500 coins a mission. (Note- If you do the campaign, a good way to get stuff is through picking things off of dead bodies)

Stealing and pickpocketing I woudn't consider the best way, due to you could get caught and end up in jail or killed by a guard. Safest way is searching chests, urns, boxes, ect. But then again they are sometimes protected by enemies, of which if you kill, you can search them for more gold! Otherwise you can sell stuff to merchants, and enchanted items make stuff more valuable. If you find gold and gems, you can create jewelry and sell that for more money than if you sold them separate (of course you can do this with other items too). But probably the most money off all comes when you slay a dragon. They usually hold a lot of money. Hundreds to be more specific.
