There are three talent specs for priests - Discipline, Holy and Shadow.
Discipline priests are masters of the magical shield, and can perform relatively powerful heals. Discipline is about preventing damage as much as healing it. They are excellent for healing tanks.
Holy priests have a mix of Area of Effect heals, Heal over Time effects and situational heals. Holy revolves around healing up targets efficiently, and can support any healing role.
Shadowpriests are damage-dealers, relying on Damage over Time effects to drain their foes and give health and mana back to their allies. They are very survivable, deal reasonably good damage, but are inefficient as healers.
