How do you put mods in PC games?

the way i saw it done for the game half life was that the deasighners made tools that they used to make the actual game and gave it for free to people to "modify"the tools are "tecture editors""3d charcter editor"level editore"sound editore""code editor"ect some companys sell mod tools that can be extended to many games.BUT a KEEN KNOWLEDGE OF PROGRAMING coding tecturing aect are ESSENTIAL>


i think you have to download another game onto your game that your trying to mod

1 way I know is to go into my documents and find the folder with the name of the game and click into it. then find a folder in there that has downloads on it and drop the files in there.

Installing mods in the Sims 2 is a complicated process if you don't know what you're doing. It took me a long time to figure it out.

The steps are pretty much the same no matter where you're downloading from so just try to stay with me here as I give you the basic steps to installing your mods into the game.

YOU WILL NEED WINRAR. Winrar is a windows data compression tool that allows you to zip and unzip files. It is free and easy to use.

To download package files you will need the Sims 2 Pack Clean Installer. Find it here: http://sims2pack.modthesims2.com/index.php?page=3 .

For both of the above downloads just click run and follow the following instructions for installing.

Once you are done you can get started with these steps:

Step One

When you go to a Sims 2 downloading website such as Modthesims2 or Cool Sims look through the mods and find what you like. Once you find a mod you like click download. Do NOT click on mesh unless you are a creator which is a whole other process. On any site, you have to click on the file itself or the picture then click save. On most computers it will automatically save in the downloads file in your documents. Make sure that it does. If it's not there try saving it again but this time click on save as -> downloads. On Modthesims2.com you will also have to do the same with the files under the Mesh section. Even if you are not a creator. You will need those files for the original file to work. If there are no files under the mesh section then don't worry about it. If there are and you click on them, it will take you to the website where they can be found. Save them from there.

Step 2

You don't have to directly do step 2 after every file you download. That would take forever. However, during this learning process, I would go through the whole process the first time to make sure you are doing it right. What I usually do is download all the mods I want first then go through the installing process. Sorry, there is more after just downloading the file itself. :(

Oh well it's not that bad anyway.. once you get a hang of it.

So once you're done with all of the above we shall continue:

This is where you have to really pay attention:

Go to your downloads file and right click on the file you downloaded. If you correctly installed winrar then the picture beside should look something like this: http://www.Flickr.com/photos/76332114@N03/6854643144/in/photostream .

When you right click on the file click extract here. Don't click any of the other extract choices. Just extract here.

One or more files may be appear with out the winrar symbol beside it. You can now delete the original winrar file. Be careful not to delete anything else by accident. If you have more than one winrar files you can highlight all of them and click extract here. Then you can delete the winrar files. Once you've done that you can delete the read me files if you don't want to read them and any other file that doesn't look like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/76332114@N03/7000807815/in/photostream

The difference between the two is that one has the symbol inside a page. The one that is not inside the page means it's a package file. The symbol for the package file is also bigger. You can also right click on it and it will tell you somewhere that it is a package file.

Step 3

If all of your files have been extracted and you understand the difference between a package file and a regular extracted file we can move on to step 3.

Here's where we actually install the files.

If you correctly installed the Sims 2 Pack Installer then this will work. Double click on a package file and you will have to click allow on the pop up box requesting permission. Then this box will pop up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/76332114@N03/7000841695/?edited=1.

Click install. Then install again. Then OK. Then close the program. The file should be in the game.

Now open up your documents. EA games -> The Sims 2 -> downloads.

The files should be in the downloads file.

With a regular file you need to move the extracted files from your downloads folder into the downloads file within the folder of EA games.

Now all your mods should be installed into the game. Do not make a new downloads folder or mess with any other folders within EA games unless you know what you are doing.

Check your game to see if they are there. If they don't show up you may have to go to where you save and shut down your game and enable mods. The game will also give you the option to enabled mods or disable them when the game starts up.

Its simple once you get it actually .

First go to a file that you would like to download and install.

Click the link and it should ask you to "Run, Save, Cancel."

Click 'Save' or 'Save As' Depending on what shows up

When it pops up for a place for you to save whatever you chose

Go to 'Computer' or 'My Computer'

Click Save

Also make sure you have something to extract it with. I use winRAR but some people use winZIP . Either one works. To extract the files go to whichever file you choose to downlaod and right click it and it will then ask you to extract the file, extract it and put it into a folder, cut the folder and paste it into the downloads folder in the sims 2 folder. And there ya go :) sorry if its confusing im on a different computer for a day or so..
