How do you save in luigi's mansion?

You talk to Toadstool.....

Actually, you find Toad and make him stop crying, after that he will ask you if you want to save. (I think.)

Also, capture the Boos as you go and Professor E. Gadd will automatically save your game for you after each Boo you capture.

The game autosaves every time you complete a level. I don't think you can manually save the game.
