The Apalachee were called the Mission Indians because they were Native American people who lived in the Spanish missions established by Spanish colonizers in Florida during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Spanish sought to convert the Apalachee to Christianity and assimilate them into Spanish colonial society through these missions.
