How do you unlock characters on Super Smash Bros. N64?

To get Ness in brawl you can do one of three things.

1) Play five matches in brawl mode.

2) Reflect ten projectiles

3) Have Ness join your team on subspace emissary.

The first two options require you to beat Ness in a fight to unlock him.
