How do you work out if an attack uses the attack stat or the special attack stat in Pokemon?

say if it is flame thrower the Pokemon does not make contact with the other the flamethrower does that is a special attack. Where a move like mach punch it makes physical contact and hits that is a regular attack.

On Pokemon how can you tell if something is special atk or special def or what?
I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to ask here, but I'll try to answer best I can. If you're asking how to view the Special attack or defense stats, they'll be in the summary page of your Pokemon. If you're asking how to tell if the moves your Pokemon knows use the special attack/attack or special defence/defence stat, if you go to your Pokemon's summary page, scroll along until you see the four moves listed. Press A to access them. To the left there will be a small icon of usually two variations: one is purple and looks a bit like a ripple in water, the other is red with what looks like a spiky yellow/orange blob. The purple ripple images show that the move uses special attack, the red-orange blob shows that it uses normal attack. I'd really like to answer better but I'm not sure how.
