About 30 seconds to a minute depending on connection speed. In other words, if you'd just gone and done it you'd be finished by now.
You can test your Xbox Live Connection on your dashboard under "My Xbox" and if there is an issue with the connection it will tell you what it is.
Test your xbox live connection in network settings and your nat type is open
If you have a laptop, then you can plug an Ethernet cord into the Xbox and then connect it into the Laptop. Test your connection on your Xbox and you should be set.

you have to bring a cord from your internet box to your xbox or buy a wireless tranmeter for the back of your xbox then go under settings and test connection if it does not work you have to probably type in the code for your internet
It could be settings on one of the Xbox. Go to settings and test the Xbox Live connection. Auto configure it back to the original settings. It should fix the problem.
This could be either 2 things: 1. If you mean cant get onto a live game etc, you are a silver member and should buy a gold membership. 2. Xbox live may have problems with there server which will prevent you from logging on. Also, you say your internet connection is perfect. Is that on your xbox or PC? I mean is, can you do a network test on the xbox without any problems.
There are two ways to connect to Xbox live... 1) Plug a connection cord into the back of your 360 (Under the USB Port) and plug second end into Modem/Router. 2) Try and connect to XBL, If it fails then go to "Test Connection" Second way is to, 1) Buy a wireless connection adaptor for the 360 2) Plug it into the USB port on the 360 3) If #2 fails then Go to Test Connection and go to Configure Connection (or something similar) 4) Once in Configure then select your Modem/Router Name. 5) Test Connection again.

Perfect Dark and Prey on the Xbox 360. However, there was Xbox live on the original Xbox.
Run a connection test by going to Guide/Settings/Network Settings/<my-network>/Test Xbox Live Connection. If this ends with an "!" and a description of "You may connect to Xbox Live but may experience some limitations..." select the "More Info" and verify that it is a NAT error. You will need to know how to log into the Adminstrator functions of your router as well. See your router's user manual for that information.
The easiest way is to buy a Wireless Networking Adapter off eBay (about £40), turn on your wireless router, plug the WNA into the USB port on the back of the 360, go to the dashboard and go to "test xbox live connection". If everything is order, press the xbox guide and follow the instructions :D
