(1000 blocks = 1000 meters = 1 kilometer) FYI, your character is 1.7 blocks tall, to fit the average person's height, and from high building limit to low building limit, there can be 128 blocks (or 80 in hexadecimal) stacked on top of each other. There is only a limit in the y (or up) direction, although, at +/-12,550,821 meters in either the x or z directions, the game starts glitching up and creates what is called "the Far Lands", and it gets weirder after there.
