It depends on how large the files that you put on it are. I have a 2GB flash drive, and I put on it a ton of files. 16GB is a lot of capacity.

Is a 4 MB usb flash drive going to hold many documents or pictures?

No, a 4MB flash drive will only hold about two average sized pictures. Documents vary in size a by huge amounts so it is hard to tell but it would probably not hold more than 20 documents. A 4GB flash drive(there is an enormous difference between megabyte and gigabyte) will hold about 2000 average sized pictures though.

External hard drive vs portable hard drive?

Short answer: An external hard disk is a removable hard disk. Longer answer: A removable hard disk is any hard disk which is designed to be easily removed from the computer. This includes, but is not limited to, external hard disks. There are also internal hard disks which are removable via a special slot in the front of the machine. Flash-based usb thumb drives are also frequently referred to as "removable hard disks." Even though they are not hard disks at all the OS treats them as such, and so for all practical purposes they can be considered removable hard disks.

Is a 40gb external hard drive enough?

"Enough" will greatly depend on what you plan to do with the drive. It's more than large enough to transfer documents between computers, and it could probably hold a couple dozen XVid-encoded movies, or most people's music collections. It is likely unsuitable for higher-definition video.
