What we call 'The Sims 2 Story Mode' is actually a place to make a story out of the pictures you take by pressing the key 'C' in your game.

You can choose pictures and write captions, then (if you are regestered on 'thesims2.com') you can upload them and share them with other sims players. There aren't a 'number' of sims in the mode, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question.
