The Wii U and the Wii are completely different, but nintendo named it similar for some reason. you don't need the Wii to use the Wii U at all, the Wii u is backwards compatible with the Wii but if you buy the wii you cant use the wii u. So the answer to that is Wii U and Wii are completely different consoles and you don't need a wii to buy the Wii U. The price is not confirmed for the Wii U but there is a chance it could cost around $600. But don't go for what websites say yet until Nintendo anuses a price yet, As it could be surpassing. If you want to you can look on what the main console part of the Wii U looks like on the link below, It looks more rounder and less boxy then the wii. The video shows the wii u controller at one point but its mainly about the console. And some gameplay trailer and some game creators words of some of the confirmed 3rd party games. (The game footage is from Xbox and PC versions of the games, so thats not Wii U graphics, but these games are confirmed)
