No, it is vastly inferior. Gold equipment can hold a higher enchantment than diamond, and this really is its only advantage. Gold equipment, with only a few exceptions, mine slower and do less damage than diamond equivalents, with the added disadvantage that they wear out in a fraction of the time too.
It is also better to use iron tools than gold usually. Iron lasts longer than gold. If you're going to use gold, it is best to use it for the powered rails.
