No actually, it can be 2 players. Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii can be 1-4 players, optionally, AI can fill empty spaces (if 1 player, AI has to play as at least 1 other). During the Subspace Emissary it's 1 player but the 2nd player can tag along and help you through it.

For the new Super Smash Bros for Wii U, you can have 1-8 players, optionally, AI can fill empty spaces (if 1 player, AI has to play as at least 1 other). Released earlier was Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 3DS, which can have 1-4 players, optionally, AI can fill empty spaces (if 1 player, AI has to play as at least 1 other).
