Is it better to play the Kingdom Hearts games in chronological order or by release date?
The Kingdom Hearts series consists of many prequels and side-games.
To better experience the feel of the games; it is best to play the games in the order that they were released.

The best way to play the games would be in chronological order. Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain Of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep. They should be played in that order. Also if possible try to play the final mix versions ( Japan and Austrailia only) as they will give you a better understanding of the series.
*NOTE* Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is only for the DS while Birth By Sleep is only for the PSP*

Kingdom Hearts 2 came out almost 4 year after the original. I say that both story are interesting, but the graphics and depth of the stories in Kingdom Hearts 2 is much better than that of Kingdom Hearts. Also in the 2nd kingdom hearts you get better keyblades, clothes and you meet a bunch of new friends like mulan, axel, pete, belle and many many more
