This is an oddly controversial topic in Zelda fandom. Most would tell you that Sheik is a female due to the fact that Sheik is stated to be the alter ego of Princess Zelda. However, many still believe that she used magic to actually give herself a sex change due to Sheik's obviously male build, and others still refuse to acknowledge the fact they are the same person at all and insist that Sheik is 100% male.

When talking about Sheik, it is best to avoid discussing Sheik's gender or using any masculine or feminine pronouns to refer to Sheik at all simply because no one can seem to agree on Sheik's true nature.

Due to the nature of Sheik's gender, many use "He-she-it" or simply "Sheik" to refer to he-she-it, and use the term "Sheik" to describe anyone of whose gender they are uncertain.
