No it was not a blimp. It was a Zeppelin. A zeppelin is much bigger and is a frame work filled with a bunch of bladders when a Blimp is a single balloon filled with gas.

What German blimp crashed over New Jersey?

LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and crashed in Lakehurst New Jersey on May 6, 1937

How did the Hindenburg go down in flames?

The "doping" of the outer layer of the blimp was EXTREMELEY flammable. The Blimps back then were NOT grounded...Therefore, when they flew it over, after the storm, the static electricity sparked scortching the whole outer layer before the blimp actually landed...That's why the frame didnt catch on fire until the blimp hit the ground....

What is a German airship?

It was a blimp. The German's just before WW2 had one called the Hindenburg, a passenger ship, that blew up as it was coming into New Jersey from Germany. You can see film of it. One man died, but it looks like the entire blimp is one big ball of fire.

Are the Hindenburg and the goodyear blimp examples of hot air balloons?

No. All three are so-called "lighter than air" machines, because they're filled with gases that make tham buoyant in normal atmosphere. But the gases are different. The Hindenburg was filled with hydrogen, and was destroyed in 1937, in a catastrophe so deadly and so graphic that hydrogen was never again used to float airships. Blimps today, including the Goodyears, are floated with helium. And hot-air balloons, as the name implies, are floated with . . . . .

What goes up when you let go of it?

More than likely a Helium filled balloon. A Hydrogen filled balloon is very flammable and might burst into flames similar to the Hindenburg blimp/dirigible. Helium is not flammable.
