Is there a way to play World of Warcraft for free?

Yes there is. Runescape, Aion, Guild Wars are just a few of the many games that are along the lines of World of Warcraft.

Guild Wars, which was made from ex-Blizzard employees who worked on the original World of Warcraft, has no subscription fees but optional in game item purchases but those aren't required. The URL to find NCsoft's games is linked below. Some are pay to play but again, Guild Wars is not.

The only way to play the game for free is via a Private Server. However, use of private servers is against the Terms of Service, meaning your particular account, if found out, can be banned from the official servers.

Generally private servers are also riddled with bugs, poorly moderated and suffer from the most powerful people being the moderators' friends.

No, there is no way to play World of Warcraft on the official servers without paying the ~$15.00 subscription fee. When you first purchase WoW, you get a free month, that is it. You might get a day or two free here or there sporadically as the result of an over extended maintenance problem.

Probably. There are many MMORPG's online. One I know specifically that I play is a Japanese anime styled game called "Onigiri." It's similar due to the fact that you go on quests and can team up with people to battle monsters as you explore the world. And it's completely free. I recommend it.
