There are pretty much two stages of childhood in Fable 2. They are best described as the "crib stage" and the "little bed" stage. Before the spire your children stay at the "crib stage". When you come back they are grown in the "little bed" stage. Any child born after the spire is complete will grow into the "little bed stage" within a few game days.

you cant. i had a wife before the spire and she divorced me cos i was away to long. she also took my child :( I have to disagree I've never lost my spouse after being trapped in the spire... but i'd wager that extra funds 4 them probably helped that allot. I kept my spouse. Relationship status needs to be very happy, and you have them follow you to the dock where you get on the ship. Don't dismiss them just get on the ship. Your spouse will say good bye, and be waiting for you in you at your home when you get back. Visit them right away if you don't want to get divorced right after the mission.

So before you go to the spire you get a new quest called Saving the Light or something...So you go to the temple of light and talk to the monk and you go into the Wellspring to kill all the Shadoworshipers inside the Wellspring...
