1. You get them when they ask YOU if they can and not have to fight (You might have to fight to get there though.)
2. You fight them in the wild and just maybe they'll join you.
Although you can only get a few with out fighting and most you can only get after you beat the game. Also it makes it easier to befriend in the wild if you buy friend areas.
