I read the novel as a kid out of curiosity. In the novel- which deals mainly with the time traveller ( always called that) -turned me off- why can"t he have a name) I have heard of a one-track mind but this is going too far.- I cannot recall a museum having any role in the plot- they jumped directly to the far future where there are two competing races the Eloi, who are intellectual, and the rather brutish working class Morlocks- and so the plot got cooking. I cant recall a museum having any role in the novel . In the movie they tested a small scale model of the time machine with a cigar as a test object- and it vanished into the future- but that was the movie.
