Yes it was, just like Québec City. Montreal's walls were first constructed as wood in the 17th century and then rebuilt in stone from 1717-1738. They never saw battle, however, and the growing city found them more a hindrance than anything else. By 1817, they were gone, but you can see what remains of the walls just north of City Hall in Champ-de-Mars.
