Yes you can save games and you can download games from the PlayStation store and store them on the PS3 harddrive
When you first start a game, most games ask you if you would like to save a profile. Say 'yes' and your game is saved. Most games will also ask you if you would like to enable what is called an 'auto-save' feature. This means that whenever you reach a checkpoint or save point, it will automatically save your game to the profile you created when you first started the game. If auto-save is not enabled, or unavailable, you must save manually. Most games allow you to save manually anyway. Pause the game, go to the 'save' option, or go to the options screen and hit 'save'. This will save your game to the original profile too. If you did not make a profile, your game will not save at all.
