There have been, and will be so many different literary criticisms regarding what defines a comic/comics. Like many forms of art and literature, the definition of comics will generally depend a lot on personal reflection.
For me, many comics have the characteristics of:
1. The depiction of the passing of time and/or sequence
2. The combination of text and imagery
3. Simplified imagery that allows the reader to relate easily
4. Multiple paneled images
Whether or not you consider things such as single panel "comics" comics is where the idea of personal definition comes into play.
