I am very sorry to hear of your mother's death. Usually when the kidney's just shut-down then the whites of the eyes (skin on the person) will become jaundice (a yellow look), but it was the liver that caused your mother's eyes to turn black. She was dying and because of certain medications and her filtering organs shutting down the body was not able to get rid of the toxins in her body, thus, the kidneys along with meds would have cause the blackening of the whites of her eyes.
