Sounds like you're talking about Ocarina of Time, of which the gift is the Hookshot. After doing so, return the Sacred Forest Meadow and go through the maze, where you'll learn the Minuet of Forest. Then, hookshot the tree to go to the Forest Temple. You can do other sidequests in the meantime, too, such as getting Epona.
