The word Cross is probably of Greek origin, standing for: Coloring, Marking, Painting.

The Greek word is ΧΡΩΣΙΣ (pronounced: chrosis, the soundless "i" between the "s"-s goes extincting and -lately- expelled (ex-spelled), so: chross). ΑΠΟΧΡΩΣΙΣ stands for: Shade (color fading, actually), de-coloration (discoloration). (ΑΠΟ- = De-)

The cross-sign was used for marking, that's why I believe that "Cross" = Marking, Coloring, Dying (v. Dye).
