You have to use an emulator that's made for the console the game was originally for.
For instance, if it was a PS2 game, you need to find an emulator that's designed to run PS2 games in order to run it.
If it was for a NintendoDS, you need to download an emulator for NDS games.
Gamecube needs Gamecube emulator, etc. etc. The list goes on. Find out what system originally ran the game, then run a search for, say "Playstation emulator' if it was a PS1 game, read some reviews and do a comparison to find out which one is most liked for its ability to run properly.
Or, alternatively, you can find an ISO. An ISO file basically pretends to be a CD, so you can run a computer game without a CD existing. To run an ISO and a few other similar files, you need a program called Alcohol. It's very easy to use!
